We've had cheaper ones and they'll get the occasional scratch but all of our kitties will stop to assault this thing. It's much taller and more substantial than the cheaper ones. Beware that your cat will likely climb the thing so don't put it too close to things you don't want them to be able to jump to such as book shelves, TV etc. I've seen some complaints about the base being wobbly... this is all down to how you assemble it. The bolts need to be really tight that hold the bottom on, which can be difficult with the little allen wrench they give you. Use something to increase the length of the handle end of the allen wrench (like a crescent wrench, pliers or a piece of tubing) to give you more purchase on it. better Amazon Basics purchases!Our cat has torn up our walls trying to get outside. We moved into a new (civil war aged) house but on a busy street. Our cat has been a farm cat not used to traffic. He tore up the walls and furniture. I tried other scratching items and he just supplemented with those. We finally let him outside for a few hours during the day but at night he would still tear the house up.A year I found this scratching post and he uses this exclusively now. He claws on it so aggressively that we find claws on the base around it. The post never falls down showing how stabile it is, although it does rock (our cat is 15 lbs so most anything would if it were not nailed down). The seam where the sides meet had started to come apart within the first month but is still holding in there. I haven't contacted the company, so not fair to them for a fix or customer service experience. My husband assembled it in no time without a complaint. Oh, and the ball that hangs from the top is of particular fun when the cat is feeling in a playful mood.EDIT: For those who claim it's "wobbly", try using a box wrench, vice-grip or other tool to lengthen the lever arm of the tool thats supplied to tighten the bottom bolts, or use a 3/8" ratchet and appropriate hex head to do the job. They have to be VERY tight, but once they're fully seated and just won't turn anymore, there will be zero wobble.This is a much better value than the other brand that looks very similar. It's well-made and well-designed, with significant weight and a large stable base to make it a stable scratching post, as well as a climbing pole for kitty confidence. which was the whole idea, and wraps all the way around, which she loves as she wraps her legs around to rub and scratch. It's a little thin, so a really aggressive-scratcher will eventually poke holes, but so far our gentle kitty keeps it looking like new. As I've seen mentioned in other reviews, I wish the center sisal post had symmetrical mounts on both ends, so it could be removed and flipped over for fresh scratching surfaces as it wears outThe little fuzzy ball on the elastic string is a fun toy for her (and it comes with a bonus replacement ball!) as is the nice furry top for perching and observing her little world from above.With the caveat that more time is needed to gauge real longevity, this is definitely a recommended post.
